Dictionaries

There are a few options; some are much better than others. Check them out, and find the one that works best for you.

Bilingual dictionaries are translation dictionaries from one language to another. Monolingual dictionaries, also called native dictionaries, define words in the native language. Once you get used to using a monolingual dictionary, you will likely find it a better resource than a translation dictionary.

Online bilingual dictionaries

  • Луғат online dictionary with over 4000 words.
  • Glosbe online dictionary. English-Tajik and Tajik-English. This is a collaborative dictionary. You can even log in and add words and phrases to it.
  • Sahifa English-Tajik online dictionary. 25000 words Sahifa Tajik-English online dictionary. 35000 words
  • Basic dictionary online single webpage that you can scroll down. English – Tajik

Bilingual dictionary apps

  • Globse: This app gives examples of how to use the word in a sentence. Apple and Android
  • Tajik-English Dictionary: Basic dictionary. Android and Apple

Online translation

  • Google translate is better than it used to be, but still has errors.
  • Yandex translate is similar to Google translate, but often gives a different translation.
  • Chat GPT is worth a try. First send a message saying that you want to translate from English to Tajik, and then enter your sentence. It sometimes gives a strange word order, but if you then ask “Is that the best word order for that Tajik sentence?”, it may give a better answer.
  • English Dictionary.help This one is better for Tajiks who are learning English. There are lots of examples for how to use the English word.

Online monolingual Tajik dictionaries

  • Вожаҷӯ online Tajik-Tajik dictionary. This is a good one. It will tell you what part of speech the word is, show synonyms and give examples of how the word is used. Try a search for дил (heart) to see how helpful this dictionary is.
